Goddess of Victory: Nikke Game Director Discusses Third Anniversary Event and the Game’s Future

The mobile and PC game, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, is celebrating its third anniversary, marked by a major in-game event. This includes the climax of the “Rapture Queen” storyline and the largest battles seen yet. This article dives into the details with insights from the game director, Yoo HyungSuk.

Goddess of Victory: Nikke is a free-to-play third-person idle shooter developed by Shift Up. It has been downloaded over 45 million times since its launch in November 2022. Players command teams of “Nikke,” android soldiers, in a fight to reclaim the surface world from the alien Raptures. This anniversary update brings new story content, the Surface Beta mode, and fresh recruitable characters.

According to your livestream, the new anniversary story content leads to what is a “final battle.” Could you explain why such a storyline is being launched at this point?

Yoo HyungSuk: Nikke’s narrative has expanded considerably since its initial release, encompassing multiple storylines. We felt the necessity to unify these scattered narratives into a more coherent whole. The third anniversary serves as the starting point for achieving this goal, weaving together previously disparate threads.

Nayuta, the featured character for the third anniversary update, is unique compared to previous Nikke characters. Can you talk about the concept behind the development of this character and the different abilities they have?

Yoo HyungSuk: The Pioneer squad members are inspired by classic JRPG archetypes. Snow White serves as the heavily armored knight, Scarlet is the agile DPS, and Rapunzel is the healing priest. Nayuta, as the fourth member, fills the role of a supportive monk.

To prevent her from overshadowing the other Pioneer squad members in direct combat, her abilities focus on utility. Her main power is her ability to gather information through clones. Her background as a former D.E.E.P. member grants her familiarity with advanced technology.

You’re also introducing a new gameplay mode called Surface Beta to launch alongside the third anniversary. Can you tell us more about it?

Yoo HyungSuk: Surface Beta allows players to explore the most expansive environment yet seen in Nikke. We adopted a simulation-style battle system for a more immersive experience, deviating from the standard shooting format. This includes elements like discovering secret zones and puzzle-solving. The focus is on battles with Lord-class Raptures.

Rapture tactics are based on the terrain, so players must strategically position their squads. Expect even more powerful bosses to appear in the future.

Your dev team has consistently created new minigames throughout Nikke’s three-year run. What factors are usually considered when deciding what type of minigame to develop?

Yoo HyungSuk: Anniversary minigames are far from “mini.” Given the update’s significance, we invested considerable effort into a mode with a previously unseen genre, unique visuals, and a significant scale. This time, it is a management simulation where players rebuild Eden, which was destroyed for a mysterious reason.

Just the fact that we’re here celebrating the three-year anniversary shows how successful the game has been and how it’s maintained a connection with the community. What do you think are the reasons for that success?

Yoo HyungSuk: Our success stems from providing unique stories and content that distinguish us from other games. With a deluge of available content, offering something familiar would be uninspired. Our fans deeply appreciate the game’s world and narrative.

To continue providing compelling content and narratives, we emphasize to our development team that they must genuinely love the game. This passion drives us to improve and deliver exceptional experiences, which we hope to continue.

Since Nikke first launched, what have been the biggest difficulties you’ve run into and how did you overcome them?

Yoo HyungSuk: Adapting to the ever-changing gaming landscape and determining which content and stories would best engage players has been a consistent challenge for the past three years and will continue to be so. Fun is central to game development, so we must address this difficulty head-on, delivering new and enjoyable content.

That’s an interesting perspective. Do you think needing to adapt to that change has helped keep the dev team engaged? I imagine it can sometimes be difficult working on the same game for years even after release, dealing with complacency or burnout. But do you think having those consistent challenges to overcome helps with that?

Yoo HyungSuk: It’s true that setting endless goals can lead to job burnout. Like athletes, we must constantly strive to improve and demonstrate our capabilities. Thus, we emphasize learning from mistakes rather than avoiding them entirely.

This mindset has fostered continuous improvement and a strengthened team focus. Instead of aiming for perfection, we embrace growth and learn from errors, boosting the team’s concentration on goals.

You’ve been able to collaborate with some big franchises, from Evangelion to Stellar Blade to Nier: Automata to the recent Resident Evil. What’s the process in deciding who to collaborate with?

Yoo HyungSuk: Collaboration decisions come from extensive discussion. More recently, our focus is on choosing IPs that Nikke fans will find appealing. We designed the Resident Evil minigame with this in mind, and we hope players are enjoying it.

Nikke has also shown up at some surprising real-life events, like the San Diego Padres baseball game and on the Hudson River in New York. Will we see Nikke at other real-world events in the future?

Yoo HyungSuk: Yes, we want to provide multi-faceted enjoyment outside the game. Seeing Rapi throw the first pitch in San Diego was an honor. We will continue to strive for similar opportunities.

Speaking of the future, what does Shift Up have planned for Goddess of Victory: Nikke in 2026?

Yoo HyungSuk: In 2026, we’ll keep providing fun both in and out of the game. We’re planning various events and updates, including surprises for the 3.5 and fourth anniversaries. We also plan to improve operations for a more stable experience, so please enjoy the game.

Since the third anniversary’s story is centered around the “final battle” theme, could you give us a hint about what comes next?

Yoo HyungSuk: We anticipate moving the story forward to a new stage in 2026. Our goal is to weave all the existing stories into a single, powerful culmination, and then propel the narrative further.

Nikke has built up quite a following of passionate fans around the world in its three years. As we celebrate the anniversary, is there anything you want to say to the players who’ve been on this journey with you?

Yoo HyungSuk: Meeting American players in person at LA Anime Expo, with Cosmograph, was a truly memorable experience. Their gratitude and excitement touched us deeply. These moments are invaluable, reminding us of the passion that drives our work.

While game development can be exhausting, fan support empowers us to overcome challenges and create exciting content. We sincerely thank our players for their unwavering dedication and enthusiasm.
