In Elder Scrolls Online, there was recently a graphics update that polishes up the starting areas to offer new players more. Now you can play the MMORPG on PS5 and Xbox for free.
Why is the game free right now?
As part of Elder Scrolls Online’s “Play Free” promotion, the developers have announced on their website (via elderscrollsonline.com) that all players on PS5 and Xbox will be able to play the MMORPG for free until March 20.
Note, however, that you need a subscription to the online functions to play on both platforms. This is not free and, according to the website, ESO does not work without it even for the test period. If you still want to try out the MMORPG, you can look forward to pretty starting areas.

What’s the deal with the graphics upgrade?
Elder Scrolls Online recently tweaked the graphics of the MMORPG with Update 45. The update, which was released on March 10, 2025, overhauled the starting areas of Bleakrock Isle, Bal Foyen, Stros M’kai, Betnikh, and Khenarthi’s Roost.
Similar to the Star Wars MMORPG, the areas were not built from scratch, but individual textures, objects and sights were polished. The zones were created before the game’s release over 10 years ago and looked outdated compared to newer areas.
If you start playing Elder Scrolls Online now as part of the free period until March 20, you can experience the MMORPG’s graphical improvements right at the start of the game.
PC players will be left empty-handed?
No, while console players can play ESO for free until March 20, PC players are getting the best deal ever for ESO with the current promotion.
