Call of Duty’s First “True Sequel”
Sledgehammer Games’ development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was reportedly a whirlwind of crunch, fueled by a tight timeline that was half the length of a typical Call of Duty game’s development cycle. This came about due to the studio’s reassignment from their planned project, Advanced Warfare 2, to a rushed production of Modern Warfare 3. This decision was reportedly driven by the need to fill a gap in the 2023 release calendar left by the delay of another Call of Duty title.
From Expansion to Full Sequel
Originally conceived as an expansion to Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3 eventually morphed into a full-fledged sequel. This shift in scope reportedly led to a sense of confusion and betrayal among Sledgehammer staff. Many felt they were initially misled about the project’s scale, and the accelerated timeline added significant pressure to an already demanding development process.
The Impact of a Compressed Timeline
- Crunch Culture: Sledgehammer staff reportedly worked nights and weekends to meet the ambitious deadline, a common practice within the game development industry.
- Collaboration Challenges: The studio’s collaboration with Infinity Ward, the usual developers of the Modern Warfare series, further complicated development. Sledgehammer had to consistently seek approval and feedback from Infinity Ward, adding a layer of complexity to the project.
- Development Inefficiencies: Despite prior assurances, Sledgehammer experienced a similar compressed development cycle with Call of Duty: Vanguard. This led to a feeling that they were again being tasked with an impossible timeframe, despite previous promises from Activision.
A Sacrificed Vision
Sledgehammer’s original vision for a sequel to Advanced Warfare, codenamed Anvil, was ultimately shelved in favor of Modern Warfare 3. This decision meant sacrificing a potentially unique project for a more commercially viable option. While Modern Warfare 3 features a popular zombies mode, multiplayer maps, and a single-player campaign, the game’s rushed development reportedly led to a campaign that was widely criticized by reviewers.
The Legacy of Modern Warfare 3
Modern Warfare 3‘s accelerated development cycle has sparked debates about the impact of rushed production on the quality of game development. While the game’s release does allow players to carry over their operators and skins from Modern Warfare 2, creating a “true” sequel in a sense, many critics argue that the game’s rushed development resulted in a less polished experience. The story campaign in particular has been lambasted for its lackluster narrative and recycled elements from previous games.
The release of Modern Warfare 3 on November 10th marks the latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise. However, it remains to be seen whether the game will be able to overcome the negative feedback surrounding its rushed development and deliver a satisfying experience for players.
