Ghostrunner 2 Review: A Cyberpunk Ninja’s Return

Lethal Weapon

Ghostrunner 2 maintains the core gameplay loop of its predecessor – the exhilarating one-hit-kill action. Imagine Hotline Miami or Katana Zero, but in 3D space, with a potent mix of mobility options. The fast-paced combat is a highlight, with enemies designed to be both challenging and satisfying to overcome. Respawns are swift, and checkpoints are generous, minimizing frustration when things don’t go as planned.

A crucial addition is a stamina meter for blocking. While blocking sounds powerful, evasion remains the key to survival due to the meter’s quick depletion and the frequent use of unblockable attacks. Blocking does offer more flexibility in boss battles, making them feel more manageable and entertaining.

Rogue Ghost

Ghostrunner 2 introduces a compelling roguelike mode called Rogue Runner. This mode mixes elements from the main campaign – including upgrades, enemy types, and special abilities – into randomized parkour and combat challenges. The randomized nature necessitates adaptation and quick decision-making.

Each run begins with basic skills and a limited number of lives. Players can choose the type of level (combat or parkour) for each run. Level types and difficulties affect rewards. Beating a stage can unlock more lives, or upgrade chips, some of which are unique to Rogue Runner. This creates an engaging and replayable side mode.

A core strength of Ghostrunner 2 lies in its level variety. From tight combat arenas to expansive parkour sections and exhilarating motorcycle segments, each area offers new challenges and opportunities to exploit skills. The one-hit-kill mechanic transforms combat into a dynamic puzzle-solving experience, requiring careful planning and quick reactions. The parkour segments offer the same exhilarating wall-running, rail-grinding, and grapple-hooking as the first game, but often include more complex mechanics. The inclusion of vehicles, such as motorcycles, adds an interesting layer to the exploration aspects of the game. The soundtrack is perfectly suited to enhance the adrenaline-pumping action.

The story is more substantial in Ghostrunner 2. The narrative follows characters from the original game, introducing new characters and details about the post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world of Dharma City. Conversations with these characters significantly enrich the experience, providing context for the player’s missions and enhancing the overall feeling of immersion.

The system for skill progression is streamlined and rewards exploration. New skill chips are unlocked naturally through play, and purple memory chips, hidden throughout the levels, allow players to equip those abilities by adding slots to their motherboards. This encourages comprehensive exploration of each level rather than just focusing on collectibles.

Skill progression is straightforward and effective. Players can choose to enhance skills like shuriken throwing, parrying, or even gaining potent buffs to improve their combat prowess. These choices directly influence gameplay approaches, offering substantial variety and customization.

The fresh level design that made the first game so memorable continues in Ghostrunner 2. Throughout the 10-12 hour campaign, new enemy types emerge, abilities and powers are gained, and environments outside of Dharma City are explored. These varied locations, along with the new arenas, create an abundance of new challenges and opportunities for the player to express their skill and prowess. There’s a truly impressive level of variation within each of its gameplay styles.

The motorcycle sections are particularly engaging, offering high-speed chases and acting as a critical exploration tool. These moments, combined with a dynamic soundtrack, greatly improve the overall experience, and provide some of the game’s most satisfying gameplay experiences.

Overall, Ghostrunner 2 builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, offering a more fleshed-out world, intriguing characters, and exciting new gameplay elements. While the core one-hit-kill combat loop remains, enhanced mobility, new abilities, and captivating level design ensure a thrilling and replayable experience for both fans of the original and newcomers to the genre.
