Starfield Is the Present and Future of Bethesda Game Studios…at Least for a While
After years of anticipation, Starfield has finally launched. While many gamers are now immersed in its vast, explorable universe, the future of Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) is already looking beyond this monumental release. While The Elder Scrolls 6 is undeniably in the works, Starfield will remain the dominant focus for BGS for a significant period.
Why Starfield Will Be Our Focus for a Long Time
- Starfield’s Enormous Scale and Replayability: Starfield offers hundreds of hours of gameplay, packed with rich role-playing elements and a high degree of replayability. Players can shape their characters and make impactful choices that affect the universe, ensuring a unique experience each time.
- Extensive Post-Launch Support: Bethesda has a history of providing substantial post-launch support for its RPGs. Starfield will receive a steady stream of updates, content additions, DLC, and even full-blown expansions, guaranteeing a prolonged lifespan for this title.
- The Lengthy Development Cycle of AAA Games: Modern AAA game development requires years of dedicated work. While The Elder Scrolls 6 has begun full production, it’s likely to take several years before it’s ready for release. Starfield itself took eight years to develop, and The Elder Scrolls 6 could take a similar amount of time.
A Long Wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5
The Elder Scrolls 6, despite being announced back in 2018, is unlikely to release before 2028, aligning with the anticipated release of the next-generation Xbox. This could mean that Starfield becomes the sole BGS release for the current console generation.
Fallout 5, based on Todd Howard’s preference to focus on one project at a time, is likely to follow The Elder Scrolls 6. This means we may have to wait even longer for the next entry in the Fallout series, potentially pushing it beyond 2030.
The Future of Bethesda Game Studios: A Look Ahead
Given Todd Howard’s age and commitment to directing large-scale projects, it’s possible that Starfield might be his last foray into a new universe. While a sequel is not entirely off the table, a long wait might be necessary, potentially spanning more than a decade.
It’s a strange concept to imagine a world without the creative vision of Todd Howard and his team. But the longevity and scale of these games, coupled with the time required for development, make Starfield a vital part of BGS’s present and future, at least for the coming years. And with a vast universe to explore, we have plenty of adventures to enjoy before looking to the next horizon.
