God of War Ragnarok Mod Bypasses PSN Restriction

God of War Ragnarok Mod Removes Controversial PSN Requirement — and Its Creator Has Vowed to Maintain It

The release of God of War Ragnarok on PC has been met with a mixed reception from players, largely due to Sony’s insistence on requiring a PlayStation Network account to play the game. This has prompted a vocal segment of the PC gaming community to express their discontent. However, a new mod has emerged that bypasses this requirement entirely, and its creator has pledged to keep it updated, even if Sony takes steps to counter it.

The Rise of the NoPSSDK Mod

The NoPSSDK mod, created by iArtorias, is a simple yet effective tool that eliminates the need for a PSN account to play God of War Ragnarok on PC. The mod effectively removes the PlayStation PC SDK runtime requirement from the game, which allows players to launch the game without the PSN overlay. This approach cleverly circumvents the account linking requirement.

The mod has quickly gained popularity, with over 1,764 downloads from Nexus Mods at the time of writing. iGV has verified that the mod works as advertised, and its creator has assured users that they will continue to maintain the mod even if Sony attempts to patch it out. “I will try to maintain the tool even if something changes, but hopefully nothing crucial happens,” they stated in a post on Nexus Mods.

The PSN Requirement: A Controversial Move

Sony’s implementation of the PSN requirement for its PC games has been a source of frustration for many players. While the requirement is understandable for online multiplayer games, forcing it upon single-player titles like God of War Ragnarok has been widely criticized. Players have argued that this requirement restricts access to the game for those who either do not have a PSN account or live in countries where PSN is unavailable.

Sony’s decision to enforce the PSN requirement on God of War Ragnarok is especially perplexing considering that Ghost of Tsushima, another recent PlayStation PC port, does not require a PSN account for its single-player campaign. This disparity has only fueled criticism of Sony’s approach, leading some players to call for similar mods to be created for other Sony games that require PSN accounts.

The Fallout: Review Bombing and Regional Restrictions

The PSN requirement has already caused significant controversy, with Helldivers 2, another Sony game on PC, experiencing a review bombing campaign on Steam after the requirement was implemented. This incident led to Arrowhead, the game’s developer, to temporarily disable Steam reviews and express frustration over the situation. Sony eventually reversed its decision regarding Helldivers 2’s PSN requirement, but the damage was already done.

However, even after reversing the requirement for Helldivers 2, Sony’s PC games still remain unavailable in over 100 countries due to the lack of PSN availability. This limitation further highlights the negative impact of the PSN requirement on the accessibility and enjoyment of Sony’s PC games. The NoPSSDK mod offers a potential solution for players who are affected by this restriction, but it remains to be seen how Sony will respond to the growing community of modders and their efforts to circumvent its controversial policy.
