Quest Requirements

Unlike many OSRS quests that demand high skill levels or numerous items, Shield of Arrav keeps its requirements minimal. The most critical aspect is finding another player to partner with you; this cooperation is essential for completion. Beyond that, you’ll need just 20 coins if you plan to join the Phoenix Gang. The other primary items, two Phoenix crossbows, are acquired during the quest itself as part of the Black Arm Gang’s objectives.

Before embarking on the quest, decide which of the two rival gangs, the Black Arm Gang or the Phoenix Gang, you and your partner will each join. If your combat level is low, the Phoenix Gang route avoids combat. Conversely, if you prefer to skip a combat encounter, the Black Arm Gang route is more suitable. Ensure your chosen partner opts for the opposite gang to facilitate the necessary item exchanges.

Shield of Arrav OSRS Quest Guide

Your adventure begins in Varrock. To kick things off, you have a couple of starting points depending on your preferred gang. If you aim to join the Black Arm Gang, simply speak to Charlie the Tramp, located just outside Varrock’s southern gate, and inquire about the alleyway nearby. He’ll direct you to their hideout.

Alternatively, if you’re leaning towards the Phoenix Gang, start by visiting the Varrock Palace Library. There, find and speak with Reldo, the librarian. He will share a story about the Shield of Arrav and suggest you read a specific book on a top shelf, which is blue and white. After reading it, talk to Reldo again and ask about the Phoenix Gang’s whereabouts. He won’t know directly but will advise you to speak with Baraek, the fur seller in Varrock Square, for more information.

Joining the Black Arm Gang

For those joining the Black Arm Gang, your journey begins with Charlie the Tramp by Varrock’s southern gate. Ask him about the alley, and he’ll reveal it leads to the gang’s hideout. Head inside and introduce yourself to Katrine. Express your interest in joining, but keep Charlie’s identity a secret. To prove your loyalty, Katrine will task you with infiltrating the Phoenix Gang’s armory and stealing two Phoenix crossbows.

This is where your partner, who should be a member of the Phoenix Gang, comes in. They will acquire a Weapon Store key from their gang. Meet up and have your partner trade this key to you. Take the key to the Phoenix Gang’s hideout, situated in the southeast corner of Varrock, south of the Rune Shop. Use the key on the locked door in the small room, then climb the ladder. Inside, you must defeat the Weaponsmaster before you can safely grab the two Phoenix crossbows. With the crossbows in hand, return to Katrine. Hand them over to officially join the Black Arm Gang. Then, head upstairs in their hideout and search the cupboard to claim your half of the Shield of Arrav.

Joining the Phoenix Gang

To align with the Phoenix Gang, begin by locating Baraek, the fur stall owner in Varrock Square. Discuss the Phoenix Gang with him. Initially, he might be hesitant, but offering him 20 coins will loosen his tongue, and he’ll reveal the gang’s hideout is in the southeast of Varrock. Continue questioning him to gather all possible information.

Proceed to the hideout, marked by a red exclamation point on your map, and climb the ladder inside. Speak to Straven and ask to join his gang. When he mentions the Varrock Herald, expose him by stating you know he’s part of the gang. To earn his trust, Straven will assign you a task: eliminate Jonny the Beard, found at the Rusty Anchor Inn, a bar in southern Varrock. After defeating Jonny, he will drop a secret report. Collect this report and deliver it to Straven. This act grants you membership to the Phoenix Gang, along with the all-important Weapon Store key. Remember to trade this key to your partner, who needs it for their Black Arm Gang task. Finally, locate the chest in the southwest corner of the hideout and claim your half of the Shield of Arrav.

The Varrock Museum

With your respective half of the Shield of Arrav secured, the final phase of the quest involves reuniting the pieces and obtaining proper recognition. Head to the Varrock Museum and present your shield half to Curator Haig Halen. In exchange for your shield piece, the Curator will provide you with two copies of one half of a certificate. This is a crucial step for the cooperative aspect of the quest.

Now, meet up with your partner. You must trade one of your certificate halves to them, and they will trade their corresponding certificate half to you. This exchange ensures that both you and your partner each possess a complete, valid certificate. Once you both have a full certificate, proceed to Varrock Palace. Inside, find and speak with King Roald. Present the completed certificate to him, signifying the successful recovery of the Shield of Arrav, and officially conclude your quest.

  • 5 Kudos: Upon speaking to Historian Minas inside the Varrock Museum after the quest, you can claim these Kudos. Kudos contribute to your overall museum display progress and unlock further content.

This quest, while simple in its requirements, offers a unique cooperative experience and sets the stage for future adventures. Enjoy your rewards, and remember the importance of working together!

Shield of Arrav OSRS Solo Method

While the Shield of Arrav quest is fundamentally designed as a cooperative experience requiring two players, it is possible to complete it by yourself, albeit with an additional step. The “solo” method isn’t truly solo in the purest sense, as it still necessitates interaction between two characters. The only viable way to achieve this is by creating a second OSRS account.

You would then play both accounts simultaneously. One account would join the Black Arm Gang, following its specific objectives, while the other account would join the Phoenix Gang and complete its respective tasks. The key interaction point, where the trade of the Weapon Store key and, more importantly, the certificate halves occurs, would be performed by logging in and out between your two accounts or by managing both client windows at once. Without this exchange between two distinct characters (even if controlled by the same person), the quest’s progression literally halts, making true single-character completion impossible due to the unique certificate trading mechanic.
