RUST New Player Handbook: Beach Spawn to Starter Base

A Beginner’s Guide to RUST — From Beach Spawn to Starter Base

Diving into RUST can feel overwhelming. The world is harsh, players are often ruthless, and understanding the core mechanics takes time. This guide is designed to smooth out your initial experience, walking you through the critical first steps from the moment you wake up on the beach until you’ve secured your very first base. Master these fundamentals, and you’ll soon understand why RUST captivates so many players.

Choosing a Server

Your journey begins on the server selection screen. RUST offers various server types, including Official, Community, and Modded. Official servers are typically home to seasoned players and can be unforgiving for newcomers. For your first few hours, it’s highly recommended to start on a Community server. Look for those labeled “beginner friendly,” “low population,” or “no wipe” if you want a longer-term experience. Always check the server’s ping; lower numbers mean a smoother gameplay experience. These servers often have fewer players, making your initial survival less stressful and providing a better environment to learn the game’s intricate systems without constant interruption from advanced players.

Your First Steps

As you spawn into the world, your top priority is immediate survival and basic self-sufficiency. The environment itself is a threat, from wild animals to other players, not to mention hunger and thirst. Your main objectives involve gathering essential resources like wood, stone, and cloth to craft fundamental tools and weapons. You begin with only a rock and a torch, so efficient resource collection is key. Learn to identify and quickly gather everything around you, preparing for the challenges that lie ahead. The crafting menu, accessed by pressing ‘Q’ by default, will become your best friend in these crucial early moments.

Crafting Your First Bow

Your starting rock is useful for basic resource gathering, but you need a proper weapon fast. The bow is your earliest reliable defense and hunting tool. To craft it, you’ll need 50 Cloth and 200 Wood. Cloth comes from hemp plants, which are small green bushes found frequently around the map. Wood is obtained by striking trees with your rock, aiming for the glowing red ‘X’ markers for bonus resources. For arrows, gather 25 Wood and 10 Stone for every two arrows. Stone can be harvested from large rock formations, again by hitting the shiny spots. Craft at least ten arrows, load your bow, and prepare to protect yourself.

Crafting Sleeping Bags

Dying in RUST is inevitable, but where you respawn is a strategic choice. Without a sleeping bag, you’ll be sent back to a random spot on the beach, potentially miles from your gear. A sleeping bag acts as a personal respawn point. You only need 30 Cloth to craft one. Once crafted, place it in a discreet or safe location. Even if you’re just exploring, dropping a sleeping bag nearby means a much quicker return to your previous location if you die. You can place multiple sleeping bags, allowing you to choose the most convenient spawn point when you perish, which is a powerful advantage.

Building Your First Base

Establishing a base is paramount for long-term survival in RUST. It provides a secure place to store your items, retreat from danger, and craft in relative safety. Your initial base should be simple yet effective, focusing on essential defense and functionality rather than elaborate designs. The goal is to create a structure that protects you from the elements and opportunistic players. This process begins with gathering construction resources like wood and stone, followed by crafting specific building tools and components that will form the backbone of your shelter.

Crafting a Hammer

The hammer is the most vital tool for any builder in RUST. It allows you to place structural components, upgrade them to stronger materials, repair damaged sections, and rotate pieces if you’ve placed them incorrectly. Thankfully, it’s very cheap to craft, requiring only 100 Wood. Once you have your hammer, you can begin to lay down foundations, walls, and roofs. Familiarize yourself with its different functions by right-clicking while it’s equipped; this opens the building wheel, offering various options from material upgrades to structural repair and rotation, making it indispensable for base construction.

Building the Foundation

With your hammer in hand, it’s time to lay the groundwork for your shelter. Start with a single square foundation, which serves as the base for your building. Around this foundation, place walls, ensuring one has a doorway frame. Then, add a roof to fully enclose your space. Initially, these structures will be made of “twig,” the weakest material. Crucially, before you do anything else, place a sleeping bag inside your newly formed structure. This ensures that even if your twig base gets destroyed, you can respawn directly inside if you manage to rebuild quickly. This 1×1 or 2×1 simple layout is your starting point for growth.

Crafting a Tool Cupboard and Lock

The Tool Cupboard (TC) is your base’s heart, preventing unauthorized players from building, modifying, or dismantling your structures within its radius. Without it, anyone could simply delete your walls! Crafting a TC requires a hefty 1000 Wood. Place it securely inside your base, preferably in a central spot. To protect your TC, you’ll need a Lock, which costs 100 Wood. Attach the lock to the TC, and you’ll be prompted to create a key. This key grants access to the TC’s inventory and permissions. You can make copies of this key to share access with trusted friends, making it essential for team bases.

Building an Airlock

An airlock is a critical security feature for your base’s entrance, providing a layer of protection against raiders. Imagine running back to your base wounded; if you only have one door, an enemy could follow you straight in. An airlock prevents this by creating a small buffer room before your main base entrance. Construct this by adding an extra triangular or square foundation connected to your main base’s doorway. Enclose this new section with walls and a roof, adding a second door. Crucially, both doors should open inwards towards the airlock. This design means that when one door is open, it physically blocks the other, preventing both from being open simultaneously and giving you a secure transition point.

Fortify Your Walls and Floor with Stone

Your base starts as twig, which is incredibly fragile and can be destroyed with a few hits. The very next step after building and securing your airlock and Tool Cupboard is to upgrade your base materials. Stone is the first significant upgrade and provides a much better defense. Using your hammer, select the upgrade option and apply stone to all your twig foundations, walls, and ceilings. Each wall section will typically require 300 Stone. This process drastically increases your base’s resilience against attacks from other players and even environmental damage. Prioritize upgrading everything to stone as quickly as possible to avoid losing your hard-earned progress.

What should I do next?

With a solid stone starter base, you’ve established a secure foothold in RUST. Your next objectives can vary. Consider exploring the map (press ‘G’) to locate safe zones like the Bandit Camp or Outpost. These areas prohibit Player vs. Player combat and offer valuable resources such as Workbenches for advanced crafting, Recyclers to break down components, and Vending Machines for trading. Continue to gather resources, focus on upgrading your base further with metal doors and sheet metal walls, and begin researching more advanced blueprints. Remember, RUST is a constant learning experience; embrace every death and failure as a lesson to improve your strategy for the next server wipe.
