Genji Tips & Tricks - Overwatch 2 (iGV)

Overwatch 2 Genji Backstory

Genji Shimada, the younger son of the Shimada clan leader, lived a life of luxury and recklessness. He showed little interest in the family’s criminal empire, much to the dismay of his older brother, Hanzo. After their father’s death, Hanzo attempted to force Genji to take responsibility, leading to a violent confrontation where Hanzo believed he had killed Genji.

However, Genji was rescued by Overwatch. Severely wounded, he was given a second chance through cybernetic enhancements. Dr. Angela Ziegler (Mercy) played a crucial role in transforming him into a cyborg ninja, granting him incredible speed and agility. This new form empowered Genji to fight against the Shimada clan and dismantle their operations.

Years later, after Overwatch disbanded, Genji wandered the world, grappling with his identity as a human merged with machine. He eventually found guidance from Zenyatta, a monk who helped him reconcile his conflicting nature. When Overwatch was reformed, Genji rejoined, ready to fight for justice and protect the innocent alongside his former comrades.

Overwatch 2 Genji Guide: How to Play

Shuriken

Genji’s primary weapon is the Shuriken. He can throw them in two ways: a burst of three in a straight line for focused damage, or a fan of three for wider coverage. The straight burst is ideal for engaging targets at medium range and dealing precise damage. The fan is useful for close-quarters combat or when facing multiple opponents.

Tips for using Shuriken effectively:

  • Practice switching between fire modes to suit different combat situations.
  • Aim for headshots to maximize damage output.
  • Use Shuriken to harass enemies from a distance while waiting for cooldowns.

Deflect

Deflect is a crucial ability that allows Genji to turn enemy projectiles against them. When activated, Genji reflects all incoming projectiles in a cone in front of him for a short duration. This can be used to negate damage from hitscan weapons, explosives, and even some ultimates. The reflected projectiles deal the same damage as the original.

Mastering Deflect:

  • Learn to anticipate enemy attacks to time your Deflects effectively.
  • Deflect can also be used to deal damage to enemies behind cover.
  • Be aware of the cooldown and avoid using Deflect recklessly.

Swift Strike

Swift Strike is a fast-moving dash that deals damage to enemies in Genji’s path. It allows for quick traversal across the battlefield and can be used to engage or disengage from fights. Importantly, Swift Strike’s cooldown resets if Genji eliminates an enemy. This allows for chain eliminations and high mobility during team fights.

Swift Strike strategies:

  • Use Swift Strike to close the distance to vulnerable targets.
  • Practice aiming Swift Strike to ensure you hit your intended target.
  • Look for opportunities to reset the cooldown by securing kills.

Passive

Genji’s passive ability, Cyber Agility, grants him increased mobility. He can climb walls and double jump, allowing him to access high ground and navigate the map with ease. This passive is essential for positioning and flanking enemies, giving Genji a significant advantage in engagements.

Cyber Agility’s versatility allows Genji to disrupt enemy formations, create openings for his team, and escape dangerous situations. Mastering the movement options it provides is crucial for playing Genji effectively.

Ultimate

Genji’s ultimate ability, Dragonblade, is a devastating melee attack. Upon activation, he unsheathes his katana and deals significant damage with each swing. Dragonblade lasts for a limited time, during which Genji can swiftly eliminate multiple enemies. Effective Dragonblade usage often determines the outcome of team fights.

Tips for Dragonblade:

  • Coordinate with your team to create opportunities for Dragonblade.
  • Prioritize squishy targets like healers and damage dealers.
  • Use Swift Strike to quickly close the distance to enemies.
  • Be aware of crowd control abilities that can interrupt Dragonblade.

Genji Overwatch 2 Playstyle

Genji is a highly mobile flanker hero who excels at diving into the enemy backline, eliminating key targets, and disrupting their formation. He requires good mechanical skill and game sense to be played effectively. A successful Genji player will constantly be on the move, looking for opportunities to create chaos and secure kills.

Genji’s playstyle revolves around utilizing his mobility and Deflect to outmaneuver opponents and survive engagements. He thrives in chaotic situations where he can quickly eliminate isolated targets. Effective cooldown management is essential for maximizing Genji’s effectiveness.

Ultimately, mastering Genji involves understanding his strengths and weaknesses, practicing his movement and aiming, and developing the game sense to identify and exploit opportunities. With dedication and practice, you can become a formidable force on the battlefield with this cyborg ninja.
