Overwatch 2's price tag feels too high.

Overwatch 2 PvE: Is It Worth $15?

Overwatch 2 arrived with a major promise: a dedicated PvE (Player vs. Environment) campaign. Now that it’s here, players are questioning whether the “Invasion” bundle’s price tag is justified. Let’s delve into the content, cost, and overall value proposition.

Overwatch 2 PvE Campaign

The “Invasion” update introduces story missions where players team up to fight Null Sector. These missions take place in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg. Before or after missions, Winston’s Lab is accessible to reveal additional narrative elements.

These PvE experiences occur after Winston’s recall, leading to fresh hero interactions. The difficulty settings range from Normal to Legendary. You can expect to see the engaging story, new maps, new enemies, and co-operative matches from this mode.

The primary focus is on cooperative gameplay, with teams tackling objectives against AI opponents. Blizzard aimed for replayability through varying difficulty levels and character-specific interactions. The story helps develop the characters more, and it has the potential to bring excitement to the player.

The Price to Pay

Accessing the PvE content requires purchasing one of two bundles, which has been a point of contention for many players. These bundles include varying degrees of in-game currency, skins, and battle pass access.

Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle ($14.99)

  • Access to Invasion story missions
  • 1,000 Overwatch Coins
  • Legendary Sojourn skin
  • Sojourn unlocked for new players

Overwatch 2: Ultimate Invasion Bundle ($39.99)

  • Includes everything in the Invasion Bundle
  • Null Sector Premium Battle Pass + 20 Tier Skips
  • An additional 1,000 Overwatch Coins
  • Two Legendary Skins (Cassidy & Kiriko)

There Are Too Many Downsides

While the gameplay can be enjoyable, several drawbacks weigh heavily against the $15 price tag. The value proposition simply doesn’t align for many players, particularly those who primarily enjoy the game’s PvP aspect.

One point of contention is the limited scope. Currently, the available missions feel brief, leaving players wanting more content for the cost. The time between new PvE updates also plays a role in determining whether the purchase is justifiable.

Furthermore, the PvE content feels separated from the core game, like an expansion rather than an integrated feature. Given the initial promise of a robust PvE experience, the current offering falls short of expectations.

The missions themselves, while fun, might not offer enough replayability for some. After completing them on various difficulties, the incentive to return diminishes until future content drops.

Comparisons have been drawn to the free content released alongside “Invasion,” suggesting that the free updates provide more value and engagement than the paid PvE missions.

The initial challenge is exciting, but once mastered, the gameplay loop can become repetitive. Many players may find themselves returning to PvP after experiencing the PvE content.

The price makes it difficult for people who play for fun to experience the PvE missions. The fact that there is a price is bad enough, but the value does not match the price.

Another problem is the lack of character builds or progression in the PvE missions. Players simply take their PvP heroes into these missions, which reduces the unique appeal.

The current PvE content might feel disconnected from the long-term narrative. It introduces new characters but doesn’t offer a deep dive into them.

Verdict

Ultimately, whether the Overwatch 2 PvE “Invasion” bundle is worth $15 depends on your individual priorities. If you are a hardcore fan invested in the lore and eager for any new content, the purchase might be justifiable.

However, if you are looking for a substantial and replayable PvE experience, it’s difficult to recommend the bundle in its current state. There are other ways to spend $15 to purchase a good game with way more playtime hours.

For the casual player or those primarily interested in PvP, the free content in Overwatch 2 might offer more value and engagement. The skins within the package are not enough to cover the price for the entire thing.

Until Blizzard expands the PvE content with more missions, character progression, and replayability features, it’s hard to argue that the “Invasion” bundle is a worthwhile investment for most players. It might be worth holding out for future updates before making a purchase decision.
