Ubisoft’s Apology for Star Wars Outlaws Progress Loss: A Trinket and Loyalty Points
Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws encountered a rocky start for early access players who shelled out extra cash for the Gold Edition. A problematic update wiped away hours of gameplay, forcing many to restart entirely. In response to this widespread frustration, Ubisoft offered a compensation package that has been widely mocked: an in-game trinket and a small amount of Ubisoft Connect loyalty points.
The Problem: Lost Progress During Early Access
- The issues arose after Ubisoft released patch 1.000.002 for Star Wars Outlaws.
- PlayStation 5 players were specifically warned about save file corruption if they played on the older version.
- Ubisoft advised affected players to start a new save to avoid “issues and progression blockers.”
- This news angered players who had already invested considerable time into the game during the early access period, which required purchasing the more expensive Gold Edition.
- The loss of progress was made even more frustrating by the fact that players paid extra for the opportunity to play early.
The “Apology”: A Trailblazer Trinket and Ubisoft Connect Units
To compensate players who lost their progress, Ubisoft sent an email offering them some in-game items. The email acknowledged that asking players to restart was not ideal, especially during early access. The package includes:
- An in-game “Trailblazer” trinket.
- 100 Ubisoft Connect Units.
Ubisoft Connect Units are loyalty points that can be redeemed for in-game rewards or discounts in the Ubisoft Store. Players can collect the Trinket from the delivery crate in the back of the Trailblazer once you reach Toshara. Ubisoft stated that it is actively working on adding the Ubisoft Connect Units to accounts so that they can be used as soon as possible. But is this really enough of a compensation?
Player Reaction: “Laughable” and “Worthless”
The community response to Ubisoft’s compensation has been largely negative. Many players deem the offered trinket and loyalty points as insufficient to address the frustration of losing hours of progress. Some of the major complaints include:
- Players who lost many hours of progress view the rewards as a mere pittance compared to their wasted time.
- One Reddit user stated, “Yes, the compensation for it is laughable. At least they could’ve given us some materials to upgrade our vehicles and the blaster a little faster. But the game is still fun and I hope no other game breaking bugs appear.”
- Others who haven’t encountered the issue are now hesitant to update the game for fear of losing their own progress.
- Some have called the Ubisoft Connect Units “worthless.”
Positive Patch Notes and Final Thoughts
Despite the initial issues, Patch 1.000.002 appears to bring several improvements to the game.
- Enhancements to visual fidelity on PS5.
- Addressing issues with the game.
- The inclusion of 40fps support, which strikes a balance between visual quality and framerate fluidity.
Star Wars Outlaws officially launched on August 30th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. While the launch hiccup left a bad taste in the mouths of some early adopters, the core gameplay may still provide an enjoyable experience. The question remains whether Ubisoft’s compensation will appease the disgruntled players or if the initial controversy will continue to cast a shadow over the game’s release.
