Amid All the Excitement for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda Issues Surprise Starfield Patch — and Fans Are Hoping It Heralds DLC News
The Surprise Patch
While anticipation builds for the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has unexpectedly deployed a new patch for Starfield. This update, currently available in Steam beta, aims to improve performance and introduce new modding capabilities. The patch adds “Very Low” display settings, intending to boost frame rates on less powerful machines. It also expands support for Creations (mods) and addresses various bugs related to quests, user interface, and vehicles.
This comes as a welcome surprise, since Starfield’s user review rating has been less than stellar. Players are being encouraged to provide feedback as Bethesda works toward finalizing this update.
Starfield’s Rocky Launch and Bethesda’s Commitment
Released in September 2023 as Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years, Starfield received mixed reactions compared to the studio’s established Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. Despite reaching over 15 million players, concerns arose regarding Bethesda’s long-term support for the game, especially given the “mostly negative” reception of the Shattered Space expansion released in September 2024.
Bethesda has reiterated its commitment to Starfield and promised “exciting things” for the game this year. Todd Howard has indicated the studio intends to release annual story expansions for “hopefully a very long time”.
The DLC Hope
While the patch offers some improvements, Starfield players are hoping it is a prelude to significant DLC announcements. The update addresses technical issues and enhances mod support, it doesn’t introduce new content or address deeper gameplay concerns voiced by the community. Thus, the pressure is on for Bethesda to reveal substantial plans for Starfield’s future. The community hopes this is a sign of more to come.
Xbox Games Showcase on June 8th
With all eyes on the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase on June 8th, Starfield fans are anticipating a major reveal. Speculation is rife that Bethesda might announce a PlayStation 5 version alongside a new expansion. Some even dream of a surprise simultaneous release of both. Many in the community will be hoping for concrete information about what Bethesda has in store for the future of the game.
