Helldivers 2 Patch: Player Discontent

Latest Helldivers 2 Patch Notes Introduce New Balance Changes, and Players Aren’t Happy

Arrowhead’s Perspective

Arrowhead Studios, the developers behind Helldivers 2, have announced a new balance patch, marking the first in a planned series of adjustments. The developers, specifically Alex K, highlighted their commitment to transparency in their approach to balancing, aiming to address player feedback on weapon and stratagem interactions. They acknowledge the potential for disappointment among players who have invested time mastering particular builds, but stress that the changes aren’t meant to punish skillful play, but rather to encourage experimentation and a wider range of playstyles.

The Helldivers 2 Nerfs Are Met With A Negative Reception

The recent patch notes have sparked considerable backlash from players accustomed to using certain powerful weapon combinations, notably the Railgun and Breaker, in conjunction with the Energy Shield Backpack. This combination has been a go-to strategy for many players, especially on higher difficulties, but the patch significantly nerfs the performance of these items. This has led to player frustration, with some expressing that the changes feel punitive and undeserved.

The Helldivers 2 New Meta Makes it Harder to Tackle Higher Difficulty Missions

The balance changes seem to shift the meta in Helldivers 2, making higher difficulties even more challenging. Instead of focusing on a few overpowered weapons, developers aimed to create a more balanced weapon pool, where each gun has a unique role. However, this approach has caused issues. Players point to a glaring lack of buffs for less popular weapons, leaving some powerful weapons to fall into disuse. Players feel that the adjustments have negatively impacted the effectiveness and viability of certain options on higher difficulties, leading to struggles in completing tough missions. Examples include the R-63 Diligence Marksman Rifle and the R112 Recoilless Rifle, that are now severely underpowered, making other, less popular and powerful weapon choices not worth considering for higher difficulties and strategic team builds.

What Major Updates Are in the Helldivers 2 Patch Notes?

Stratagems

  • Orbital Barrages (120mm and 380mm): Reduced spread and increased duration.
  • Energy Shield Backpack: Increased recharge delay.

Weapons (Primary, Secondary, and Support Weapons)

Weapon Changes
Punisher Increased stagger, damage (40 to 45 per bullet), and ammo capacity (40 to 60).
Breaker Increased recoil (30 to 55), decreased magazine capacity (16 to 13).
Laser Cannon Improved armor penetration, damage against durable parts, and ergonomics.
Railgun Decreased damage against enemy parts, and decreased armor penetration in Safe Mode.
Flamethrower Increased DPS by 50%.
Breaker Spray & Pray Increased fire rate (300 to 330), decreased magazine size (32 to 26), increased armor penetration, and increased pellets (12 to 16 per shot).

The patch notes also touch on armor, but a lack of balancing for the armor system has resulted in an ineffective armor stat. This further adds to the difficulties players have with higher-difficulty missions.

Is the Breaker Spray & Pray the Best Primary Weapon Now?

While the standard Breaker is less effective, the “Breaker Spray & Pray” has seen an increase in popularity. Its increased fire rate and armor penetration make it a viable choice for close-to-medium range engagements, especially against Automatons. However, its effectiveness decreases significantly beyond this range, leading to inaccuracy issues that can potentially hinder strategic gameplay, making it a situational weapon. The Flamethrower, on the other hand, has become more potent, presenting tactical considerations, as errant flames pose a risk to the player and their allies.
